Field and Stream Names the XPR rifle as the “Best of the Best.”

Review of article in Field and Stream magazine. Review by Winchester Repeating Arms staff writer Scott Engen.

David E. Petzal, the noted gunwriter and rifle editor for Field and Stream magazine recently had some great words for the XPR rifle from Winchester Repeating Arms.

“…A thoroughly 21st Century rifle….”

In the Best of the Best section of the September 2015 issue of the magazine, Petzal noted that the XPR “…is a thoroughly 21st Century rifle, and Winchester’s first truly new bolt action in ages. At this price point ($549 MSRP) the XPR is inexpensive, but by no means can you consider it cheap. The polymer-stocked long-action model comes with the Model 70’s M.O.A. trigger, which is a revelation.”

“…the XPR is inexpensive, but by no means can you consider it cheap.”

To make the cut and be named as “The Best of the Best” by the magazine’s editors, it must first undergo testing by the publication’s experts. In all more that 150 different products were tested, and only 42 made the short list.

For the rifles, the testers fired three shots at 100 yards from three different types of ammo, then they inspected the guns for overall fit and finish, weighed the trigger pulls and carefully checked the barreled actions with a borescope.

(Only three centerfire rifles, including the XPR with its MSPR of $549, made the list’s final cut. The other two rifles were a $1700 autoloader and a $1,300 custom-grade bolt-action.)
